When Should You NOT Be in a Relationship and Walk Away?

When keeping a relationship means giving up the future you truly want, silencing your needs, or staying primarily because you fear being alone, these are good reasons to reconsider the relationship. A healthy relationship should allow you to feel safe, respected, and free to be yourself while building a life you both want. Every relationship requires some negotiation and concessions, but your deepest desires deserve an honest conversation.

In CHOSEN, my new book, I show you that you are not seeking perfection. You are seeking a clear answer about something deeply important: marriage, future plans, commitment, or having a baby. You can begin practicing my walking away tools without immediately leaving the relationship. It is a process I teach you in CHOSEN.

The six laws of CHOSEN

Here’s the process in brief…

The six laws I teach in CHOSEN help you tie up his heart through warmth, understanding, shared joy, and connection, while getting clear about the future you want.

If talking about moving forward turns into another argument or more excuses, you may need to walk away. This does not necessarily mean slamming the door or even leaving the relationship. It can begin with stepping away from chasing, convincing, and trying to solve his objections for him.

If he gets upset because you need an answer, give him space. If he then reaches out to reconnect, you can begin rebuilding with warmth, clear boundaries, and a timeline for real progress.

This gives him room to experience what your connection means to him and what losing you could feel like. He must decide whether he is willing to fully choose you or lose you.

And you can see whether you are building a future together or repeating the same cycle.

Reconnecting does not reset the clock.

Breaking Up and Getting Back Together: Rebuilding Is NOT an Endless Loop

If you keep breaking up and getting back together but he still won’t commit, you may be caught in an on again, off again relationship. Rebuilding a relationship takes more than missing each other or exchanging loving messages. It requires real movement toward the future you both want. In CHOSEN, I describe the pattern that can keep a woman waiting long after she thought she had finally walked away:

Rebuilding is not an endless loop. You ask for commitment, he breaks up or you walk away, he reaches out, you reconnect, things stall, you walk away again, and the pattern repeats.

That is not rebuilding. That is a cycle, and cycles keep you exactly where you started, only more tired. This is especially true in a long-term relationship, where a year or more has already been invested. The longer you have been together, the less time there is to spend going in circles.

If he returns after a breakup or after you have walked away, he already knows what you want and that you will walk away again. The clock does not reset to zero. He must come back ready to move forward, not to begin the same loop. If he cannot, the most loving thing you can do for yourself is close the door and keep your life moving. From here, the ball is entirely in his court.

FROM CHOSEN BY ADRIENNE EVERHEART

If waiting has left you angry or argumentative, your frustration deserves your attention. Repeating the same argument will not resolve his endless excuses. You can take responsibility for how you communicate while still holding him responsible for his choices. Becoming calmer does not mean agreeing to wait forever.

CHOSEN helps you recognize his objections, express what you want, create space, and distinguish genuine rebuilding from another round of waiting. You will find scripts and guidance for moving forward without turning every conversation into a debate about your worth.

Finding Love After 40 Without Settling for Less

Finding love after 40 can bring your desires into sharper focus. You may want marriage, a loving partner to grow older with, or a family of your own. If having children matters to you, waiting indefinitely for a man to commit can feel especially painful. Your time matters, whether you are thinking about parenthood or the next chapter of your life. The future you want matters, man or no man!

Wherever you find yourself, you are allowed to want love, independence, and mutual care. A healthy relationship makes room for all three. You can still find a partner who shares your values, follows through, and chooses a future with you. Being over 40 does not mean you have to settle for endless excuses simply to avoid being alone.

You can love a man deeply and still recognize that his promises are not becoming progress. Are you moving toward marriage and a family together, or caught in a cycle of waiting, arguing, breaking up, and reconnecting without anything changing?

You can also love a man deeply and mutually choose a commitment ceremony instead of marriage, or explore a legal agreement with an attorney to address specific protections in your relationship. A ceremony alone does not provide the legal protections of marriage.

In CHOSEN, I teach the law of “Everything Is Negotiable.” Get clear about what matters most to you, explore what you can both agree to, and recognize what you are unwilling to give up. You’ll want this book by your side as you work toward the future you truly want.

Your future matters

Should You Stay or Walk Away When He Won’t Marry You?

You do not have to spend another year wondering, “Should I stay with someone who won’t marry me?” If marriage is what you want, your next step is to get clear, communicate your truth, and recognize whether he is willing to build that future with you.

CHOSEN teaches you why walking away works, how to tie up his heart through connection, and how to recognize real commitment if he returns. Give your relationship a chance to move forward without giving endless excuses more years of your life.

He gets to decide whether to choose you or lose you. You get to decide how long you are willing to wait.
