Do avoidants come back? Yes, most of them do. He goes quiet, disappears for weeks or even months, and then one day your phone lights up with “Hey, been thinking about you.” But if you’re reading this, you probably want to know more than whether he’ll return. You want to know how long you’re supposed to wait. You want to know what to do with yourself in the meantime. And most of all, you want to know what will finally make him stay this time. Because an avoidant man coming back and an avoidant man committing are two very different things, Diamond Girl, and the difference has more to do with YOU than you might think.

Why Avoidant Men Pull Away (and Why They Come Back)
Before we talk about why avoidants come back, let’s look at why they leave. Not every pull-back is a bad sign. Sometimes he needs time to process his feelings for you, and that space can actually be a good thing. Other times he gets scared. He feels pressure, and he shuts down.
There’s also a deeper reason I see again and again. A man needs to pursue, provide, and maintain, without competing with you. When he feels he can’t maintain a relationship, whether that’s emotionally, financially, or with his time, he pulls away. He also can’t feel he is competing with you, but do not make yourself small for his benefit! I teach this philosophy more in depth in my book CHOSEN.
Avoidants may also be avoiding the extra stress that comes with commitment and obligation. This is especially true if his career isn’t where he wants it to be. A man who doesn’t feel solid in his own life often doesn’t feel ready to build one with you.
Why Do Avoidants Come Back?
So why do avoidants come back? Because what they’re doing isn’t working. They find themselves alone, and they miss you. Friends are moving on and getting married, meanwhile the avoidant isn’t making much progress.
Here’s the part most women miss: many avoidant men don’t feel the desire to commit until they’ve lost what they love. If you never walk away, or if you keep pressuring him, he never gets the chance to feel that loss.
He can’t miss you if you never leave.
This is exactly why walking away is at the heart of everything I teach. Space is what gives him room to realize what he had. If you’re new to this, start with my most-read blog, Why Walking Away Works.
Is It Love, or the Anxious-Avoidant Trap?
Here’s something I see all the time. A woman who wasn’t even that into a guy in the beginning suddenly can’t stop thinking about him the moment he pulls away.
That isn’t always love. When an avoidant man goes quiet, the uncertainty can trigger the anxious part of you, the part that craves reassurance. The less available he is, the more you want him. This push and pull is often called the anxious-avoidant trap, and it can feel a lot like chemistry.
That’s why I always teach you to find what you feel, whether he’s avoidant or not. Ask yourself:
- Do I actually enjoy who he is, or do I just want him to choose me?
- If he texted right now and wanted a relationship, would I feel relief or real excitement?
- Do I need him to make some changes to really be the right guy for me?
- Would I still want this man if he were fully available?
Your feelings are your guide, Diamond Girl. When you get honest about what you feel, his distance loses its grip on you, and you get to decide whether he’s someone you want to rebuild with at all.
How Long Do You Wait for an Avoidant to Choose You or Lose You?
Women ask me all the time, “Do avoidants come back, and how long should I wait?” My answer is around three months, (six months with the “selfish man”). But I want to be clear about something: you don’t sit and wait.
During that time you’re doing two things. You’re letting him miss you with very little contact, and/or you’re rebuilding with him in a meaningful way. Either way, your life is not on hold. Time and rebuilding work together in nuanced ways, and I walk you through all of them in CHOSEN.
Ultimately, you never want to overinvest in a man who isn’t investing in you. And remember, walking away doesn’t mean ending the relationship. It can be done in so many ways, from pulling back your energy to pulling back your availability and effort.
What to Do in the In-Between Time
- Don’t pressure him for answers. Some sort of pressure is what made him pull away in the first place. Let him come to you.
- Return to yourself. Find your rich, juicy life again. Become the woman he fell in love with in the beginning.
- Date new men if you’re single. Start slow, but keep moving forward.
Avoidants have a way of sensing when a woman will always be there for them.
When you’re in forward motion, he feels it. And forward motion is an energetic win-win: either he steps up, or you’re already on your way to something better.
When an Avoidant Comes Back, What Do You Say?
Do avoidants come back ready to commit? Not always. When he returns, you’re entering a time of rebuilding. This is often where those three months come into play.
If you’ve already set a boundary with him, for example after a long-term relationship ended, your first job is to find out what he actually wants from you. You might say:
“I understood you didn’t want me in your life, yet here you are. I’m curious, what’s changed?”
If you begin dating again, look for consistency. If he slips back into avoidant mode, let him know where you stand:
“It’s felt great to reconnect, yet I’m looking for a more regular dating relationship.”
This stage is nuanced, and it’s where most women need a plan. You can book a 1:1 coaching call with me, read CHOSEN, or get in-the-moment support from Adrienne-ish, my AI coach, who can help you know exactly what to say when he reaches out.
Get a Plan for When He Comes Back
What Makes an Avoidant Come Back and Stay?
When avoidants come back, these four things decide whether he stays:
- He has to feel safe, not pressured. An avoidant man moves toward closeness only when it doesn’t feel scary. This is where I introduce Unconditional Positive Regard into my work.
- He has to be ready. Something in his world shows him he’s lonely and isolated, and he wants connection in a safe way he knows he can maintain.
- He has to feel your consistency. Demands backfire with an avoidant. Give the relationship safe time to rebuild, as I teach in CHOSEN. Then he will either choose you or lose you.
- He has to feel your absence. Walking away from a man works. He must feel the space and absence of you before he truly values your presence.
Don’t Get Caught in the Rubber Band
Here’s the trap I see so many women fall into when avoidants come back: the endless rubber band. He pulls away, then snaps back. Pulls away, snaps back. Each time he returns, it feels like hope, and each time he leaves, it hurts a little more.
You don’t break that cycle by holding on tighter. You break it by rebuilding with intention. Let trust and consistency grow first. Then, once you feel it, let him know where you’re headed:
“Reconnecting has felt lovely, yet I want to be a wife, and I’m curious if we are on the same page.”
If marriage isn’t your next step yet, you can simply say, “I want to be fully chosen.”
Remember, he must show consistency too. Not just dating you here and there when it’s convenient for him. You are looking for a consistent dating relationship, and you deserve one.
So do avoidants come back? Yes. But whether he stays depends on whether you stop chasing and start choosing yourself. Do that, Diamond Girl, and you win either way.
