After You Walk Away: The Timeline for Rebuilding With a Man
If you are wondering how to reconnect after walking away, the hardest part is often knowing when to respond, how long to wait, and whether the relationship is truly rebuilding.
Building Commitment without Overinvesting
If you have walked away from a man, or you are just beginning the process of stepping back because you aren’t getting the commitment you desire, what happens next can feel confusing. The man often reaches out… then what?
How long should you wait for him to respond or make progress toward commitment? Should you always reply when he reaches out? How do you reconnect without slipping right back into the relationship you walked away from? And perhaps most importantly, how do you know whether the two of you are truly rebuilding or simply staying connected through texts?
Rebuilding is not about finding the perfect text. It is about creating enough space to see whether a man will actually move toward you. This is why I wrote CHOSEN.
This excerpt from CHOSEN: 6 Laws of Walking Away for the Proposal, the Ring, and the Happily Ever After introduces Minimalist Messaging, a way to receive a man warmly, respond without overinvesting, and give the relationship the very best opportunity to rebuild while still allowing his actions to reveal his intentions.
You will learn how to receive, respond, and reciprocate without carrying the connection yourself, along with why there should be a limit on how long you remain in text-only communication.
Here is how to reconnect without losing yourself in the process.
Minimalist Messaging: Receive, Respond, Reciprocate
Texting with a man you are rebuilding with should be brief, straightforward, and light on emotional investment. I call this Minimalist Messaging. It is a temporary practice to discover where things may lead, not a permanent way of communicating. Think of each text as a clean, uncluttered space holding only a few meaningful objects: warm, yet nothing added simply to fill the silence or produce an outcome.
Three months of texting without a single in-person date is not rebuilding. As outlined in the timeline at the start of this chapter, text-only contact should last only a few weeks to a month. He may slow down, disappear for several days or even a week, then reappear. Ultimately, the connection must move from messages to real-life dates.
At some point, it is perfectly okay to text him a Clarity Script such as “It has felt lovely chatting with you. It would feel great to get coffee next week. What do you think?” or “I’ve enjoyed hearing about your rafting trip. Is more outdoor exploring something you’d like to do together next week?” This is clarity, not pursuit. You share what you would enjoy, set a time frame, and give him the chance to show you what he can or cannot do. If he truly wants to reconnect, his efforts will gradually become more frequent and in-person.
Minimalist Messaging is not surviving on crumbs of communication instead of boldly walking away. A man may keep texting simply because your attention makes him feel good, soothing his loneliness or ego with no intention of rebuilding. That does not make him a villain, but it is essential to notice the difference. A message is not a promise. Remain warm, create space, and allow his actions to reveal his intentions.
Minimalist Messaging has three parts: Receive, Respond, and Reciprocate.
Receive
When he messages you, pause before answering. Take a long, slow breath. Notice what you feel now and check in with yourself later. Do not build a story around his words or focus on what you want to happen next. Read his message for what it is.
The moment you feel the urge to steer the conversation, secure a particular reply, or make something happen, you have left receiving behind and entered the world of control.
You do not need to answer any bid for communication immediately. You can simply receive it and let it sit for a bit. Breathe again and let him wonder for a moment. He needs room to pursue you, too.
Many women come to me feeling depressed, even devastated, over a text from a man because it was not what they had hoped to hear. So I ask, “What would you have liked him to say?” Almost every time, their answer sounds like a grand declaration of love straight out of a movie. When I point that out, we usually laugh together because it’s not typically how men talk in real life. The expectation doesn’t often match reality.
This is why the pause in receiving is essential. Instead of measuring his message against what you wanted, observe what he is giving you and go from there. What he brings to the table may be awkward, cautious, self-centered, or nervous. What you choose to do with his words is up to you. That is where responding and reciprocating fill in the details.
Respond
Buckle up for this one! Not every message he sends requires a reply, and not every reply needs to come full circle, capture every feeling, or explain all the purple details.
Before responding, ask yourself: Why am I saying this? Am I sharing something true, or am I trying to produce a particular response? Am I offering warmth or seeking clarity? Am I responding like a cheerleader or speaking as my authentic self? Am I responding to his actual words? Am I saying this to keep the conversation going?
Say only what is honest, what feels warm, or what brings clarity. If he doesn’t ask a question or ask about you and your life, what is he really sharing? Respond accordingly.
Reciprocate
Reciprocating means offering something warm in return without carrying the conversation. Acknowledge what he shared. Appreciate him. Answer a direct question if he asks one, then ask one gentle question of your own if that feels right. Do not perpetually stroke his ego or lead the conversation.
You can use your Really, Really Get Him (RRGH) tool from Law 3, naming one emotion he may be feeling. For example, “You must be feeling proud of that,” “That must have felt disappointing,” or “That must have felt relaxing.”
Do not ask a string of questions, keep the thread alive, or work to hold his attention. Simply receive and meet the kindness he has already offered and send him a small dose of your own feminine warmth.
What Minimalist Messaging Reveals
Minimalist Messaging is not withholding. It creates enough space and time for you to see him clearly while protecting your heart as best you can.
When you stop supplying all the momentum, watch what happens. Does he miss you? Does he ask more questions, initiate again, or make plans? When you offer a Clarity Script or suggest meeting face-to-face, does he go silent or set a date?
Now, turn your attention toward yourself. Do you feel angry if he cannot or will not rebuild? Do you feel the need to have the last word, punish him, or make him feel what you are feeling?
Space in Minimalist Messaging reveals a great deal about the man and perhaps even more about you. It is okay to feel excited about texting him one day and utterly disappointed the next. Clarity moves things forward and brings everything into focus, especially your own desires.
Minimalist Messaging gives you the best chance to connect with what is happening rather than what you hope is happening. It places a limit on how long you remain in text-only communication and protects you from overinvesting in the man or in a particular outcome.
It also gives you valuable tools for observing yourself. Am I reading his text, or am I reading into it? Am I responding to what he actually said, or to what I hoped his words would mean?
You can also practice the tools of Minimalist Messaging with other people in your life, minus the romantic goal of meeting in person, of course. You can simply practice how to pause, listen, and choose only the words that feel true and necessary. You can wrap your words in warmth without leading or carrying the entire conversation. You may discover that by communicating less, you communicate more clearly and connect more deeply.
